Is your teenage daughter wearing make up everyday?

shutterstock_10455697Working in the clinic,  I treat many teenage girls who suffer with teenage acne.

What is the cause?  Is it hormones?

Sometimes it is hormones and there is little we can do to alter hormone levels but another key contributor to teenage breakouts is something they can actually control.

 What is it?

Foundation and concealers.

Does your daughter wear thick make up with a matte effect that screams “I  wear lots of make up?”  Is she wearing it daily, even to school?

Foundations using cheaper ingredients such as artificial fragrances, colourings, mineral oil or lanolin will cause blocked pores and irritation.    Clever marketeers are targeting teenagers with low price points and trendy packaging but the truth is these inferior products are causing the very breakouts the teenage girls want to conceal with their make up. These products can clog their pores and cause a breeding ground for bacteria.  So its a never ending cycle with their skin deteriorating the longer they continue to use products that are not suited to their delicate skin.

Try and steer your daughter towards using mineral make up which uses natural earth pigments for colour and will not irritate her skin or cause inflammation.  Teen skin is sensitive so using products that are as natural as possible, do not contain any nasties such as SDA alcohol, mineral oil or lanolin is important.

Most make up product have harsh, harmful ingredients that can cause breakouts, clog pores and irritate the skin so what is the best make up for acne prone skin that you can recommend to your daughter?

I would recommend a tinted moisturiser manufactured by a skincare company rather than a make up company.  Use a product that contains natural ingredients as these will have less harmful ingredients and irritants which in turns means they will not cause breakouts.    Try to opt for an oil free make up and a non comodogenic make up which will not clog pores.

I would strongly recommend mineral make up over a traditional foundation manufactured by a make up company.  When using foundation it can be like putting an occlusive layer on your skin which cannot breathe.  For teen skin, this can be a poor choice which will lead to further breakouts.

If your daughter is using make up daily, her choice of make up is important particularly if she is worried about breakouts and acne.
